EXTRA DIRTY NEWS

Yves Jocham aka Skippo, the accidental DJ

I've been keeping an eye on Skippo for a while now and am super excited to finally get him over to play ED. I chatted with him about guilty secrets, German lager and hitting the sweet spot.

Tell us a bit about Yves Jocham?

That’s me! I’m 33, based in Cologne but originally from the lovely northern city of Bremen. I’m not just all about beats, by day I’m also a freelance graphic designer. I’ve always been into art in all its forms. Whether it’s visual or musical, I just love creating things that make people feel something.

So how does a graphic designer get into DJing?

Kind of by accident. I was designing flyers for parties, so I was already hanging around the scene. DJing always looked super fascinating to me, like some mysterious thing I really wanted to figure out. So I started learning how it works, just out of curiosity. Then one New Year’s Eve in 2016, the DJ got sick last minute and I got asked to jump in. I gave it a go, totally unplanned

Ruff, dirty, sexy, double trouble.

I first met D'mitry and Antonio after an Extra Dirty party a few years back. They'd flown over from Auckland a few times to party with us and had recently embarked on their own queer techno night, SIR.

I had the pleasure of playing at SIR last year and it was incredible! We're now firm friends and consider the SIR crew Extra Dirty fam.

Tell us a bit about yourselves and how you got into DJing.

MBVR / Antonio: I spent my childhood growing up in the magical island of Bali to a Balinese mother and a Peruvian father. My family moved to New Zealand in 2003 where I’ve been ever since. My parents put me and my siblings through music lessons from when I was 5 years old but I lost touch with music after high school.

Growing up with very religious parents and being homeschooled, non-Christian music playing at home was RARE. After starting university I remember feeling this desperate need to catch up on all things music. From Queen to Beyonce to DJ Tiesto.

The Highs and the lows
Parisian DJ High Low has recently become a Sydney-sider and the latest addition to our DJ roster. I had a chat with her to find out, among other things, why the big move.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm from Toulouse in the south of France and I moved to Paris to play with and for my bro and mentor Ben Manson. The first thing that made me want to become a DJ is Paul Kalkbrener that I had seen in concert for "Berlin Calling". The power he held in his hands to take the crowd along with him ... I think that's what I like about being a DJ, you know what I mean? (M: 100%)

Why "High Low"?

There are two reasons. When I started to DJ there was music that had just come out that was so deep and melodic that it made me "high" (I'm ashamed, I won't say which one 😜 ) and I also had this way of mixing which went up very high and then went down very low

PAGANO
We just upgraded the dream ... again.

PAGANO is one of my favourite DJs and Producers in the world and it is my absolute pleasure to welcome him to our Extra Dirty dance floor at our Mardi Gras weekend event on Sunday 3rd of March.

BIO /

Emerging from the vibrant soundscapes of Italy and now based in the UK, Pagano has solidified his reputation for seamlessly fusing house and techno, adding his unique spin on iconic classics.

DJ Mag UK rightfully boasts, "Pagano has emerged as one of Italy's finest DJs. An accomplished hand in the studio and behind the decks... Pagano is no overnight DJ sensation. A keen studier of sound, the man is obsessed with finding obscure gems and unique cuts and layering them together in his own inimitable manner."

Over the years, his magnetic talent has garnered a series of high-profile DJ residencies at world-renowned clubs, including London's EGG and the iconic TRADE. His sets have echoed the halls of prestigious venues such as Amnesia, Ministry of Sound, Fabric, The Brooklyn Mirage (NYC), Space

Baby Bear, Big Sound
David Whittaker, aka Baby Bear, has been part of the Extra Dirty story since ED was just a little fella. He's a good mate of mine, a deadset lovely man and a DJ who never fails to get the dance floor moving. We had a little chat about the journey from then to now, and along the way, I found out some new things about an old mate.

How'd you get into DJing and where did 'Baby Bear' come from?

A mate of mine had a Denon CD mixer and an impressive music library in the mid 90s. He decided one day to quit so he gave me the lot. Before too long I had turntables and a rapidly growing vinyl collection and started harassing promoters for gigs.

You never choose your own nickname. In the 90s I spent a lot of time with a couple who called me Baby Bear for a laugh. So many good times together causing havoc. On the one hand it’s a corny and memorable brand name. On the other hand, the name also

Wavy ravey dancey prancy... Guy Grey
I've been hearing a lot about Guy Grey (he/him) so I thought I oughta have a chat and find out more about this DJ and fellow north coast resident.

Tell us about Guy Grey?

Well I’m from the bush in southeast Queensland. Realising I didn’t quite fit in with my surroundings I had few years stint in Europe and then settled in Gadigal Sydney, where I first connected with the queer community. I spent the next several years in self-discovery, delving into the night scene, producing video art and visuals for parties and getting myself into all sorts of mishaps & magical moments that really informed who I am today. Realising I missed my connection to land and wanting to escape the 2020 lockdowns, I made the move up to Lismore on Bundjalung country, where I’ve happily been ever since (minus a flood or two).

What was it that drew you into DJing?

I’d always felt strongly about music since I was a kid, but never really thought DJing was for me until I became mates with a

Extra Dirty 101

I’m usually a forward-looking person but lately I’ve been feeling quite nostalgic. Maybe it's because Extra Dirty has 14 years worth of skin in the game. Whatever the reason, I'm very grateful to have you in my life.

This is the story of us.

It’s Saturday night in 2002. We’re at Phoenix, that intimate little club - a dark and seductive sweatbox in the basement of the old Exchange Hotel on Oxford St Darlinghurst.

The night is called Crash, because my DJ buddy and bestie Mandy Rollins and I have been called into a meeting by management and asked what we wanted to call our new night and, in the spirit of believing a good meeting is a quick meeting, we came up with CRASH.

Crash at Phoenix on a Saturday night in 2002 is heaving. Gay men, mostly shirtless and a small but dedicated smattering of lesbians clustered in front of the DJ booth are grinding away to Mandy’s sexy AF beats. I play later, after 3am, taking the mood deeper, more hypnotic.

And you’re there.

Look, stay with

Fun Facts and Curly Questions - Bel West
I've known Bel West (she/her) for decades. In fact we first met when she was too young to be in a club and 'proof of age' cards didn't exist. She's one of my best mates and, I'm happy to say, the most recent addition to the Extra Dirty DJ roster.

I talked to Bel West about beats, bresaola and being called 'cock'!

Tell us where you're from and what you were like as a 'youngen'.

I’m originally from Coogee, but my parents moved to the Central Coast (north of Sydney) when I was young. It was beautiful but hard at the time for a young lesbian like myself. I was the odd one out everywhere but that didn’t stop me from being myself, I was naughty, fun and always doing anything to get outside of the norm. I always loved music. My parents would have parties and I would be the DJ for the evening, playing their records. My dad has great taste in music and I grew up listening to 60’s, 70’s and 80’s records. I

Space Nightclub - a big move!
It all begins with desire.

Back in 2008, ED co-founder Mandy Rollins and I had the desire to take our little party DIRTY (held at Sydney's iconic underground venue Phoenix) and make it bigger. Bigger sound... bigger lighting... and more room.

Eleven years down the track and ED has the chance to grow again. We took a chance then, and we’re taking a chance now. What’s life without risks right?

Never before have we had the opportunity to go into such a big space. SPACE nightclub on Liverpool St holds over 1000 so that's more room for the Extra Sexy Tribe to fill every nook and crany of this awesome venue. Located on Level 2 (above the Shark Hotel, but NOT the Shark Hotel) this venue offers two rooms; one large room with an amazing sound system and lighting rig, and another smaller club space for chilling out and taking a break from the main action. We're beyond excited to see you all there - you'll LOVE IT.

With 2 rooms, 2 bars, a dedicated smoking
